Male Modeling

How to Build a Successful Male Modeling Career

Breaking into the modelling industry can be a little difficult for people, especially for male models. Male modeling is not an in-demand field in the same way that female modeling is because there are less opportunities for males to put themselves in print modelling or runway modelling. Therefore, it should be obvious that getting male modelling gigs will be much harder that getting female modeling gigs. Here is some general information you need to know about male modeling so you can decide if this is a career for you.

It is often recommended that new male modeling prospects be willing to accept low paying jobs. This is mainly because the industry really does not demand many male models, so requesting higher salaries may put you out of contention altogether.

Unlike female models who can start out from as early as 12 or 13 years old, it is recommended that male models start out between the ages of 18 and 25 years. It is very easy for female models who are still teenagers to appear like women when modeling, but male models that are younger than 18 end-up appearing too childish. The good news however is that the career of a male model last much longer than that of a female model. There are many more opportunities for male models as they grow older, compared to females whose facial appearance is the main deciding factor, and maturity as well as age do not favor female models after a certain point.

Typically, the male model is usually required to be between 5'11" and 6'2". They are generally favored with a weight of 140 to 165 pounds. They should be at a fit weight and height, having a toned physique but not necessarily overly bulging with muscles.

In most cases, male modeling requires that the models spend just about the same amount of time as women each day to do range showing. The typical day will run from about 8 am to 5 pm, and you will need to model various outfits in a wide range as part of your commercial modelling career.

What is good about male modeling is the fact that like females, males also have the option to refuse certain types of shots that they may not feel comfortable doing. These include topless or nude shots. Although not as common with males as with females, exploitation is something you should look out for because there are people want to have the ability to make money off your shots that are taken nude or topless.

Male modeling has its ups and downs, and can be a viable career option if you have just what it takes to model and the edge that most designers are looking for. However, bear in mind that it will be a little more difficult to get the job because there is less demand for male models than female models.
